How Green is your Business?

Earth day symbolImage via Wikipedia

Earth day was April 22nd, but the Earth Day celebrations continue across the globe through the weekend.  I've been reflecting on the steps I've taken towards a greener business and life thus far and I continue seeking more ways to think green.

Small business owners, can make a big difference by assessing their impact on the environment.  Even though I'm only a one person art and jewelry shop, I manage to continue finding ways to make my business practices more eco-friendly.

Steps Toward a Greener Life & Business

  1. I work from home which helps reduce my carbon footprint because I no longer commute to an office or art studio.
  2. We have replaced all our lighting with energy efficient compact fluorescent bulbs.
  3. We compost all our food scraps.
  4. We recycle everything our county allows.
  5. We use energy star compliant appliances.
  6. We lowered the thermostat on our water heater.
  7. I turn off my computer and monitor at the power strip whenever I don't need them for more than 20 minutes.  I used to leave my computer running all day and sometimes even through the night.   Read When to Turn Off Personal Computers for more information.
  8. I request electronic instead of printed catalogs from my suppliers.
  9. To reduce junk mail I routinely contact companies who send unwanted mailings and catalogs and remove my address from their list.
  10. I reuse packaging materials or use packaging materials made from recycled materials when I ship to my customers.
  11. I print invoices and shipping labels on recycled paper.
  12. I continue to seek out the least toxic materials and processes to use in my jewelry and art.
  13. I use recycled metals whenever possible in my jewelry.  I buy my jewelry supplies  from
manufacturers who use recycled precious metals like gold, silver,
platinum, and palladium, whenever possible.  For more information read this informative article at Modern Jewelry: Refine & Recycle
  14. My fine silver jewelry is made using Art Clay Silver or PMC, both products are made from silver reclaimed from computer circuit boards and silver from
    photographic supplies.
  15. I write my main suppliers each year asking what steps they have taken to green their business. I am beginning to boycott suppliers who refuse to use recycled packaging materials.

These are just a few examples I have implemented to become a greener business

End Poverty Now! – Help Make History, join the “In My Name” Movement

Can one blog make difference? What about 10,000? Today, thousands of bloggers are raising their voices against poverty.  I encourage all readers of Magic Stones to Take Action to be part of the generation that will End Poverty.

In just two weeks thousands of like-minded people around the world have
taken part in in my name, and over 750,000 people have watched the in
my name videos on YouTube.

So to build upon this fantastic
online success, this weekend we're joining Stand Up and Take Action,
who are aiming to break the World Record for the largest coordinated
movement of people in history: 43.7 million people. Breaking this huge
record will amplify the clear message to governments to end poverty and
inequality and meet and exceed the Millennium Development Goals.

Everyone
who adds their support online to in my name during October 17-19 will
count towards the World Record, but we've only got a 48 hour window.

Help make history – forward this message to 5 friends and ask them to add their name at www.inmyname.com

Stand
Up and Take Action brings together a global movement of people – from
villages and cities, from rich and poor countries – who refuse to stay
seated or silent in the face of poverty and broken promises to end it.

Last
year, over 43 million people Stood Up around the world to demand that
world leaders keep their promises to end poverty and inequality and
make progress towards the Millennium Development Goals. Join with us in
this global moment of action:

Forward this email to 5 friends and ask them to add their name at www.inmyname.com

Every
day, 50,000 people die as a result of extreme poverty and the gap
between rich and poor people is increasing. Nearly half the world's
population live in poverty, 70% of whom are women.

We have the power to change this.

Thanks for all you do,
Helena, for the in my name team

Time to get your XO laptop, and to give one

Socialslide01
The mission of One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) is to empower the children
of developing countries to learn by providing one connected laptop to
every school-age child. Nicholas Negroponte
presented his idea for a "100-dollar-laptop" at TED2006. The XO laptop is now
here!
The cost at this stage is nearly double, but the machine is
awesome. While a few countries such as
Uruguay and Mongolia will buy them bulk and distribute them in schools,
you can also buy one
(currently only available in the US and Canada) until November 26.  Expectations are that the
first release of 25’000 will sell out pretty fast.  Read more on TED Ideas Worth Spreading.  Visit the Give One Get One site for more information on these amazing laptops.
